Amina Santana - 2 week pose

Here are my paintings from both week 1 and week 2 for this long pose. Each session was about 2.5 hours. The first sesh was super organized and I was pleased with the result. the second I made her look like some generic doll or something - super boring. I need to figure out edges and how to work more loose.

Trace - drawing and finished painting

This is my drawing alongside the finished painting thus far - I have been working on a "go to" head lay in, which will then be rendered for the final painting. I really want to push the structure of skull. This was 2.5 hours with white, utra marine blue and transparent oxide red.

Figure sketches - moving towards astetics

I did these at my buddies studio in Van Nuys - pleased with the direction they are taking - focused more on developing ascetics

Malo - first long painting

Fist long pose painting - struggled with process, felt like I was jumping around quite a bit - found and lost likeness - however, was able to see various shades of color - Can't wait to try again

Recent figure drawings - adding ascetics

I have been practicing with the Manican for some time and frankly - I'm ready for my drawings to start looking cool - it's probably a bit early - probably should works some kinks out in the manican - but can always go back later

Alla Prima - Mather

did this today and was pretty happy with it - although the lights are WAY blown out - need to find a way to simmer those down - Also the nose is a complex area that I definitely need practice with - did show some improvement with the eyes however

btw she was actually dressed like this

Caravaggio master copy

Master copy from one of my favorite painters - Caravaggio. I'm going to lay back into this one - but wanted to post my progress. pretty satisfied with the overall color relations but need to render out some areas

analytical figure studies

Figure studies for my analytical figure drawing class - this week we focused on the structure of the back - goal this week - figure out how the shoulder (deltoid) relates to the pectoral and scapula in perspective -  harder than it sounds

Painting from life

the following pieces are 3 hour sittings from various workshops in the L.A area. Playing with 2 methods - the first is doing keying in darks and building up form from dark to light. The other is keying in your darkest dark and then lightest light - after which painting from big to small. Also, I plan to finish the first piece.

Sculpture Studies

The first drawing was done from graphite on paper about 30 mins. Trying to achieve the subtle tonal variations of a charcoal drawing. The second was done from photograph - sculpture by Bernini. Still need to establish a more focused direction for graphite studies - as it is - I try to mass in a shadow and then jump straight to darks.

Painting studies

First plate from left to right is Anders Zorn, Sargeant - Both done with a limited pallette Yellow Ochre, Cadmium red, White and Black. The second piece is a Sean Cheetham WIP master copy with full palette.

figure drawing studies

analyzing the form in Reily method. Particularly - looking for the "shoulder plane" or giving the shoulder a solid 3d feel by depicting the scapula and deltoid and capping off the form. Will work the remainder of the week on the shoulder and scapula.

Head drawing workshop

Still messing with Riely method head block ins and shading. Goal is to keep consistent with massing in 1 tone and then sculpting from that. The first Piece does not follow this formula - consequently the values are inconsistent. Still struggling to achieve perfect likeness
